Gamera Returns in New Project at Netflix
Gamera is back! Netflix Japan announced that the popular kaiju will star in the upcoming project, Gamera: Rebirth. It will be directed by Shusuke Kaneko, who directed the Gamera trilogy in the 1990s.
“From the Showa era to the Heisei era, the production of the new work Gamera: Rebirth of the giant monster Gamera that has been loved by monster fans all over the world has been decided! Global distribution on Netflix,” the project’s Twitter bio reads.
Gamera was introduced in 1965’s Gamera, the Giant Monster, during the wave of popular kaiju films that starred king of the monsters, Godzilla. The fire-breathing, prehistoric looking turtle monster was mutated by nuclear weapons. Gamera went on to appear in a dozen films and became a giant monster icon in Japan and around the world. This is Gamera’s first appearance since 2006.
“When I came up with my own idea for Reiwa Gamera and made a proposal, Kadokawa has already started a new project, and its content that makes me think that’s what happened, so I can expect this too,” Kaneko said. “With that in mind, I would like to support the team from the position of a baseball commentator who has experience as a manager of the Gamera team until they win the championship and pitch again.”
Netflix did not announce when the project will debut.
