1. Mary Hartline, best known for her work on ABC’s Super Circus (where she
reigned as “Queen” from January 1949 to December 1955), was no stranger to
Queendom. By the time Claude Kirchner, Super Circus’s ringmaster referred to her
as “our Queen,” Hartline had already experienced a glorious reign as “Queen of
Love and Beauty,” her high school’s equivalent of prom queen.

2. Mary’s
first broadcast job was as a member of ABC radio’s Teen Town in 1946. The show
was also briefly known as Junior Junction. She co-starred with later-Bewitched
star Dick York (who served as town mayer). Though Mary was touted as bandleader
and trumpet soloist, her knowledge of trumpeteering ended with childhood.

3. That same year, Mary contracted sever bulbar polio. Her doctor,
Martin Seifert, would later use her rehabiliation tapes as clinical study films
for med students. By then, she was highly recognizable. The students were often
starstruck.

4. Mary had four husbands: jazz musician Harold Stokes,
George Bernard (her tax lawyer), construction contractor George Carlson and
Woolworth Donahue (grandson to the famed five-and-dime store mogul F.W.
Woolworth).

5. Mary was Super Circus’ most effective pitchperson and her
likeness was used to market everything from dolls and toys to clothing and food
products. It’s said that her stunning beauty greatly improved the sales of every
item she advertised.
