Following the intense Doctor Who season finale, BBC set up this year’s Christmas special with an appearance by the “original” Doctor. Back in 2013, David Bradley (Harry Potter, Game of Thrones) portrayed the First Doctor in the Doctor Who biopic, An Adventure In Space And Time. Now, Bradley will reprise his role as the Doctor in a two-hander alongside Peter Capaldi. This special will serve as the final episode for Capaldi and showrunner Steven Moffat, while also featuring the debut of the next Doctor.

Right after the season 10 finale, the BBC released this official synopsis for the Christmas special: “The closing moments of this evening’s Doctor Who series ten finale revealed that this year’s Christmas special will be a multi-Doctor adventure featuring the current Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and the First Doctor (David Bradley). The cliffhanger ending will continue at Christmas.”

“At this moment we’re filming the Twelfth Doctor and the First Doctor meeting. Right now, I’ve just been on the set of the First Doctor’s TARDIS which has been beautifully recreated. David Bradley’s recreation of William Hartnell is so eerily perfect, it could fool you. I’ve just been watching a scene where he is so perfectly William Hartnell, you could be convinced it’s him,” said Moffatt.

While Bradley’s appearance has been confirmed, rumors have been circulating that another familiar face with join the Doctors for the special. “Fans will have to wait until the Christmas special to see Peter Capaldi’s time as the Doctor come to an end. But today it has been announced that former companion Clara Oswald, played by Jenna Coleman, will be making a guest appearance as the Doctor regenerates. Wow,” shared BBC Radio 2 presenter Steve Wright.

However, the assertion has yet to be backed up by the BBC.

Pearl Mackie is also expected to appear “in some form” at Christmas, along with Matt Lucas as Nardole. However, neither will allegedly be part of incoming showrunner Chris Chibnall’s new series.
