Well known indie comics publisher Fantagraphics is celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2026 with the new imprint Takumigraphics, devoted to East Asian comics.

The imprint will include comics from all over East Asia, including Japan, Korea, China, Singapore, Taiwan, and other countries from the region. It will showcase the different cultures and backgrounds, as well as their shared artistic styles.

“Takumi comes from the Japanese kanji meaning ‘excellence,’ ‘skillfulness,’ ‘ingeniousness,’ as applied to a craftsperson. This character exemplifies the aesthetic caliber of the books that will comprise this imprint – works of mastery and vision. Our logo is inspired by the seals used by Japanese and Chinese craftspeople to mark their work,” per the Fantagraphics website.

Fantagraphics made their first foray into East Asian comics was in 2010 with Moto Hagio’s A Drunken Dream and Other Stories short story collection. Following that book, Fantagraphics has published East Asian comics like Susuma Higa’s Okinawa and Gengoroh Tagame’s The Passion of Gengorah Tagame.

The first wave of books will be released in the spring and summer of 2026.
