Author, historian and collector Eric Caren capped another fantastic
discovery with a visit to Diamond International Galleries and Gemstone
Publishing.

Caren, who contributed the groundbreaking article on the
Pioneer Age to this year’s edition of The Official Overstreet Comic Book
Price Guide
, discovered what is now believed to be the biggest cartoon
illustration in an American periodical.

Featured in the Christmas/New
Years 1848-49 issue of Brother Jonathan A Holiday Pictorial (which was
originally priced at 12½ ¢), the image of the full two-page spread
Christmas-themed cartoon can be seen in the image above, held by Caren (left)
and Gemstone’s J.C. Vaughn.

Titled “Christmas,” the piece features seven
related parts, “The Invitation,” “The Sleigh-Ride,”
“The Catastrophe,” “Arrival At The Inn,” “The
Party,” and “Goodnight.”
