Ed Hannigan Original Art in Hake’s Auction #234
Comics artist, writer, and editor Ed Hannigan has made his mark on Marvel with a 20-plus issue run writing The Defenders and as the artist on The Spectacular Spider-Man he co-created Cloak and Dagger. Hannigan also applied his talents to crafting covers, and the original art for two of his covers are featured in Hake’s Auction #234.
The Spectacular Spider-Man #68 original cover by Hannigan was inked by Al Milgrom. The 11” x 17” artboard shows a close-up of the issue’s villain Robot-Master, and in his eyepiece is the reflection of Spider-Man fighting two of his robotic creations. This issue was published in July 1982.
The other lot is Hannigan’s Incredible Hulk #283 original cover that was also inked by Milgrom. The action heavy cover on 10-7/8” x 17” artboard shows Hulk leading the Avengers, including the Wasp, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye, Captain Marvel (Monica Rambeau), and She-Hulk. This issue was published in May 1983.
Both of the covers have been hand-colored with watercolors post production and somewhat matches the final published version. According to Hake’s these covers could have been used as a tryout for a new colorist.
Hake’s Auction #234 is packed with original art from the Golden Age to more recent material, which is joined by many more lots of historical and pop culture collectibles. Bidding is open now at hakes.com through March 15-16, 2022.
