The 2020 edition of E3 has officially been cancelled. The biggest trade show in video gaming, which has been held annually since 1995, will not occur this summer, according to a statement released by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA).

“After careful consultation with our member companies regarding the health and safety of everyone in our industry – our fans, our employees, our exhibitors and our longtime E3 partners – we have made the difficult decision to cancel E3 2020, scheduled for June 9-11 in Los Angeles,” the statement reads. “Following increased and overwhelming concerns about the COVID-19 virus, we felt this was the best way to proceed during such an unprecedented global situation. We are very disappointed that we are unable to hold this event for our fans and supporters. But we know it’s the right decision based on the information we have today.”

The ESA is also looking into other options with members in order to coordinate an online experience to showcase various gaming hardware and software announcements that otherwise would have occurred during E3.

The announcement comes following a declaration of a state of emergency in Los Angeles, which was issued on March 4. Several other large game-centric shows have been cancelled as of late, including the Game Developers Conference.
