Just days after Stranger Things wrapped its fifth and final season, series creators Matt and Ross Duffer have dropped big news about the franchise. While the flagship series has ended, Stranger Things will continue with multiple spinoffs. The previously announced Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 animated series will be joined by a new show centered around an important, unexplained moment from the series finale.

A flashback in the finale expands on a previously shown scene in which Henry Creel found a desperate scientist in a cave. After the scientist shot Henry in the hand and the boy bludgeoned the man with a rock, Henry opened the man’s briefcase to find a mysterious stone. The glowing item sent some kind of material into the boy’s open wound, possibly giving Henry (or igniting) his powers.

In an interview with Variety, Matt Duffer said that the currently untitled spinoff will explore the mysterious rock with a “completely different mythology.” He also said that the spinoff will answer questions from the original series but be “very fresh and very new.”

The Duffers confirmed that the show will not feature characters from the original series, rather it will star new characters, a new town and world, and fresh mythology. The Duffers said that they are now starting to write the spinoff, which does not have a release date yet.

Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 is set between the second and third seasons of the original show after Eleven sealed the gate between our world and the Upside Down, and before the Mind Flayer started building its own army. The series is being developed by Glitch Techs creator Eric Robles, and Flying Bark Productions (Marvel’s What If…?) is animating the show.
