Druillet Métal Hurlant Cover Leads Heritage International Comic Art Auction
Heritage’s International Comic Art Signature Auction is coming up soon on October 25-26, 2025. The auction’s centerpiece is Philippe Druillet’s Métal Hurlant #2 cover that showcases a character who blends organic and mechanical aspects in vibrant colors. The second issue of Métal Hurlant established the magazine’s take on science fiction, and this cover has been reproduced many times.
“This upcoming Signature International Auction in Dallas will feature its usual premium selection of original artworks from the US and Europe, but for the first time it will also include the largest selection ever of original Manga artworks,” Heritage’s Director of International Comic Art and Anime Olivier Delflas said. “The Manga wave that has swept collectors over the past two to three years – marked by scarcity and difficulty of access – has now fully extended into the field of original art.”
Manga offerings in the auction include Steve Oliff’s Akira #18 story page 16, Akira #28 story pages 41 and 42, and Akira #37 story page 9. Katsuhiro Otomo tasked Oliff with creating a hand-painted color guide for the series, and their collaboration led to the first digitally colored comic.
Masanobu Asai’s Adventure King Electric Squadron Denjiman splash page 1 shows Denjiman bursting through explosive starbursts. This adaptation of the fourth Super Sentai series was later adapted in the US as Power Rangers.
Jean Giraud’s (Moebius) Blueberry: Fort Navajo #1 story page 2 is just the second page of the Blueberry Saga. On the page, Moebius captures the action at a poker game that becomes more tense until it erupts with gunfire.
Juanjo Guarnido’s Batman Death Metal #1 Megadeth Edition cover features the Batman Who Laughs as he orchestrates musicians below like a sadistic puppet master.
Batman appearances in the auction continue with Enrico Marini’s Batman: The Long Halloween – The Last Halloween #6 “Suspects” complete 24-page story that closes the story. Marini’s Mr. Freeze variant cover from that issue, a page between Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle in Batman: The Dark Prince Charming #1, and a bruised Bruce Wayne illustration are also offered.
The auction includes four Frank Miller pages, including Batman: The Dark Knight Strikes Again #1 page 2, Sin City: Hell and Back #6 splash page 12, and Elektra Lives Again story pages 2 and 6. Mathieu Lauffray’s Star Wars: Heir to the Empire trade paperback wraparound cover features memorable images of the heroes with Grand Admiral Thrawn looming in the background.
