The entire world is covered in water, and the Mile High City is one of the few places that has survived. Denver is written by Jimmy Palmiotti (Harley Quinn) and Justin Gray (Jonah Hex) with art by Pier Brito (Daredevil). Described by Mad Cave Studios as a “gritty thriller,” the book is scheduled to debut in August 2026.

In the near future, the oceans have risen to drown the world leaving only a few safe zones around the globe. Denver is one of those locations, and it is tightly controlled, resources are rationed, and all citizens are monitored. Border officer Max Flynn has been working to keep his family safe in these very tough living conditions when his wife is kidnapped.

Max is ordered to betray Denver in exchange for his wife, so he gathers a group to search the grittier areas of the city. In the process, Max’s hunt may reveal flaws in Denver’s strict system that could cause significant problems for the last safe city.

“With two of us growing up in the age of Heavy Metal, it makes sense that Justin and I set out to build a world far outside the safety of mainstream comics, one that embraces adult material and violence without ever feeling gratuitous,” Palmiotti said. “We wanted a place where the brutality has weight, the characters feel real, and the story makes sense on its own harsh terms. Our goal was to give readers someone to care about in a world that doesn’t care back. And with Pier Brito’s explosive visual style driving every page, we’ve created an adventure that we think looks and hits like nothing else out there.”

“Jimmy and I spent many years creating comics together, so it’s exciting to see one of our creator-owned projects reaching a new audience through Mad Cave,” Gray said. “I think readers who enjoy beautifully illustrated sci-fi crime stories with a strong atmosphere and character work are going to find a lot to enjoy in Denver.”

“Working on Denver was a blast. Jimmy and Justin’s vision of this massive Tower of Babel-like city in the middle of the sea, visually, I find very inspiring,” Brito said. “There is a feeling of a broader world behind this story, which I hope intrigues the reader. It was a big challenge and a great opportunity to work on a book where I can help visualize such a scenario, from pencils to final color.”

Denver #1 features covers by Brito, Amanda Conner, Uko Smith, and Dave Johnson.

The book will debut in comic shops on August 26.
