DC to Celebrate Joe Kubert’s 100th Birthday with Several Books
Joe Kubert was an artist, writer, and educator who left an indelible mark on the comic book industry. The creator would have turned 100 years old in September 2026, and DC is marking the occasion with books honoring his work.
Kubert brought stories to life with drama and realism, consistently pushing his art to new heights. He co-created Sgt. Rock and is well known for working on DC’s war titles like Our Army at War and G.I. Combat. Kubert had a celebrated run drawing Hawkman and Tarzan, as well as Enemy Ace and Ragman. In 1976, Kubert began sharing his knowledge by opening the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art.
DC is releasing the DC Special #5 facsimile edition that was originally curated by Kubert and contains four of his favorite stories. The book comes with the original cover and a variant artist jam homage cover crafted by Kubert family members and Kubert School alumni. Contributors on the commemorative cover include Adam Kubert, Andy Kubert, Emma Kubert, Jan Duursema, Tom Mandrake, Ron Wagner, Amanda Conner, Rick Veitch, Stephen R. Bissette, Lee Weeks, Ron Randall, Steve Lieber, and colorist Brad Anderson. The DC Special #5 facsimile edition will also include foil and blank sketch cover variants and is scheduled for release on September 16, 2026.
Joe Kubert: 100 Years – A Life in Covers is a comic gallery that showcases some of Kubert’s most memorable covers. It spans decades of his work at DC with titles like The Brave and the Bold, House of Mystery, Sgt. Rock, Ragman, and others. The one-shot book includes a special foreword by Katie Kubert, a DC group editor and granddaughter of Joe Kubert.
“At his core, Joe was a storyteller. Each cover tells a story, without ever having to open up the comic, pulling you in and making you want to know more,” Katie Kubert wrote in the foreword for Joe Kubert: 100 Years – A Life in Covers #1.
“To many readers and fans, he helped shape not only a character, but a feeling… an emotion… and helped blossom a truly life-defining moment in their lives. To me, he is just Grandpa,” Katie Kubert added.
Joe Kubert: 100 Years – A Life in Covers #1 will be in comic shops on September 16.
The third release honoring Kubert’s career is Sgt. Rock by Joe Kubert: Deluxe Edition, filled with many of Kubert’s defining stories starring one of his most prominent characters.
“Presented in fully restored color, the collection showcases Kubert’s mastery of visual storytelling across stories of heroism, sacrifice, and humanity set against the backdrop of war,” according to the press release. “Whether depicting battlefield action or quieter character moments, Kubert’s work on Sgt. Rock remains a benchmark for comic book storytelling and continues to inspire readers and creators alike.”
The hardcover collection arrives in stores on September 15.
