DC Promotional Materials in Hake’s Auction
Over the years DC Comics has produced some highly collectible promotional material. In their upcoming Auction #216, Hake’s Americana & Collectibles is offering eight lots of DC promotional pieces from comic book holders to postcards to glasses.
Lot 1354 DC wire comic book sales rack dating to summer or fall 1941, stands 16-1/4” x 55-3/4” x 13”. It has ten slots designed for holding comics and each has a tin litho attachment with the names of DC Comics titles of Action Comics, Detective Comics, Superman, Batman, Flash Comics, Adventure Comics, All-American Comics, More Fun Comics, All Star Comics, and World’s Finest or All Flash Quarterly.
Lot 1356 DC Children and Comic Magazines promotional booklet circa 1942. It comprises 16 pages subtitled “The Answers to Many Questions Parents and Teachers Are Asking,” presenting articles about children and comics featuring Superman as an educational aid.
In lot 1357, Hake’s is offering a DC Comics promotional folder, circa 1954. The four-page folder has a pro DC anti-“Seduction of the Innocent” piece with promotional text as well as various “Awards for Merit and Public Service Achieved by National Comics Publ., Inc.”
Lot 1358 DC 1962 promotional postcard has the recipient’s name and address typed on the front, as well as January 21, 1962 postmark. The other side shows portraits of Superman, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen with a message to the recipient.
Lot 1359 is a Superman National Comics promotional lighter, standing 2-14” tall. The plated metal table lighter was issued to DC’s biggest distributors, circa 1950s. The sides of the lighter feature an image of DC mascot character Johnny DC with artist tools and typewriter.
Lots 1360 through 1362 are promotional glasses. Lot 1360 Superman National Comics promotional glass has wrap around design displaying DC mascot Johnny DC with pencil and typewriter and pages of Superman, Batman, Muff from Mutt & Jeff, Wonder Woman, Tomahawk, Crow from The Fox and the Crow, and Judy from A Date with Judy. Lot 1361 is another Superman National Comics promotional glass with image of the Flash instead of Mutt from Mutt & Jeff, produced by Tiffany, circa 1959, when the Flash was relaunched. Lot 1362 has a third Superman National Comics promotional glass, which also features the Flash after the character was relaunched with his own comic book title.
