Combining present techniques with classic storylines produces refreshing takes on old favorites. JMG Comics, a division of JMG Studios, is hoping to do just that with their new comic book. Imagine the Bible told through the lens of a futuristic world with robots. No really.

JMG Comics has announced the release of their first comic book series Mecha Manga Bible Heroes. Bringing biblical figures to life in a way that’s never been done before, the comic is drawn in manga style and will feature mecha, or robots, in an action adventure series. All the characters, themes, and stories from the Bible will remain the same, but in a science fiction setting with aliens, robots, and futuristic technology. “Just like modernized versions of Shakespeare’s plays, by taking a solid, meaningful story and translating its elements as faithfully as possible into a new setting, we hope to bring out some of the more amazing details that might get missed by today’s readers,” co-writer Tom Hall explained.

The first issue Mecha Manga Bible Heroes #1: David Vs. Goliath, set to ship in May, re-imagines the story of David, the shepherd boy who took down the giant Goliath. In the 32 page full color comic, the story pits David, a young kid, up against a giant weapon carrying super robot. Future issues will cover more of David’s adventures, and other classic biblical heroes like Daniel, Joseph, Jonah, and more.

Paul Castiglia, writer and editor whose credits include Archie Comics and other notable comic publishers, is managing editor on this new project. “The series is designed to appeal to anyone, whether religious or not,” Castiglia stated. “Our creative team consists of Christians who approach the material with a Christian worldview and we’ve strived to make this the coolest comic book your Sunday School teacher ever confiscated!” He also added that fans of manga and video game heroes like Sonic the Hedgehog and Mega Man will enjoy the new series.
