Daredevil #5
Marvel; $4.99
A brutal serial killer named Omen is terrorizing New York City, taking the eyeballs of his victims. He has been targeting Matt Murdock, besting the Man without Fear because he claims to see the future. When Daredevil tried to set a trap for Omen, the hero was almost killed – until the Owl arrived, shooting Omen and saving Daredevil for a reason he did not reveal. Detective Forte and Officer Callahan were on the killer's trail when Omen ambushed them and stole Callahan's eyes, leaving a traumatized Forte behind.
Daredevil arrived at the grizzly scene to find out what happened and ascertain what the detective knows about Omen. Meanwhile, Foggy Nelson has returned from Miami, making an already paranoid Matt concerned for the safety of his best friend.
In this new Daredevil series, writer Stephanie Phillips is balancing the lives of Matt Murdock and Daredevil. The villain is after Matt, not Daredevil, which has overloaded Matt's already heightened senses with a new level of vigilance. As Daredevil, he's facing a foe who seems to have a similar ability to sense his moves, leaving the hero beaten more than once. Both sides of Matt are facing serious challenges against Omen.
The city of New York has always been its own character in Daredevil comics, which artist Lee Garbett and colorist Frank Martin emphasize well. Readers get the action pages of Daredevil soaring across rooftops, and the scene-setting long shots of skyscrapers, shadow-filled docks, and busy streets. Their work gives it that unique New York feel and grounds the superhero story as Daredevil faces a serial killer preying on the Big Apple.
