Daredevil #2
Marvel; $4.99
Matt Murdock has taken on the new role of law professor at Empire State University, but it isn’t going to be a smooth transition since a new villain has entered the scene. The police are investigating a nasty murder on the subway and have found ties to similar killings, pointing to a sadistic new serial killer in the Big Apple. The first issue ended with a masked man sneaking up on Matt in his own apartment and warning him that Matt Murdock was going to die.
The second issue picks up with Detective Forte and Officer Callahan visiting the morgue where they learn about more victims who have had their eyes removed. Daredevil starts his own investigation by finding an old foe to get some information on the masked man he encountered. While the police appear to be getting closer to finding a tangible lead, Matt has his own revelation that leaves him quite unsettled.
The new Daredevil series by writer Stephanie Phillips, artist Lee Garbett, and colorist Frank Martin is a superhero comic with a thriller-style detective story. As Daredevil looks for someone with special abilities, the police are searching for a killer who doesn’t appear to have any vigilante ties. Meanwhile, Matt is doing the balancing act between his day job and night job, which is already raising suspicion among the new people in his life.
Phillips is writing an intriguing story that’s spreading in several directions, and the artists set the tone on each page from a sterile, uncomfortable morgue to the action scenes of Daredevil flexing his skills to a dark and spooky location that could be tied to a killer.
