Daredevil #1
Marvel; $5.99
Matt Murdock has thrown himself into a new challenge by becoming a law professor at Empire State University. The job is already presenting some challenges – like contrary students and a fellow professor who doesn’t seem keen on having Matt and his public reputation at the school. Fortunately, Daredevil still has his tried and true evening exploits of stopping criminals from preying on the good citizens of Hell’s Kitchen. And that’s about the time for a mysterious villain to show up who presents new and unique challenges to the Man Without Fear.
The new Daredevil series is written by Stephanie Phillips, who has a notable talent for giving both sides of characters – the superhero and the alter ego – meaty stories and conflict. This first issue sets up Matt’s new career path, the people he’ll deal with, and possible roadblocks in his path. At the same time, we see Daredevil making the neighborhood a little safer, and having fun doing it.
Artist Lee Garbett and colorist Frank Martin set the tone for the two sides of Matt Murdock. The pages of lawyer-turned-professor show Matt’s confidence and some apprehension for the new job. Meanwhile, the Daredevil pages are all about kinetic energy as he swings through the city, keyed up for the action on the dark streets below.
It was a great start for the new Daredevil book.
