Comics Galore in Hake’s Auction #229

Comics, comics, comics, and more comics! Hake’s Auctions current Auction #229 features nearly 1,600 comic books, over 300 of which are third-party certified. 

Highlighted in this section is a Star Spangled Comics #7 CGC 9.4, featuring the origin and first appearance of Guardian and the first appearance of the Newsboy Legion. 

A big, green giant comes crashing onto the scene in The Incredible Hulk #1 CGC 5.5. Along with the origin and first appearance of Hulk, this issue also introduces Rick Jones, Betty Ross, and General Ross. 

Spider-Man swings through an Amazing Spider-Man #1 CGC 9.2, signed by the late Stan Lee. This issue retells Spider-Man’s origin, and features the debut of J. Jonah Jameson and The Chameleon. It is also the first Fantastic Four crossover.

Formerly Uncle Sam Quarterly, Blackhawk takes center stage in Blackhawk #9 CGC 9.6. Featuring a cover by Al Bryant, this issue also includes work by writer Harry Sahle and artist Ernie Hart. 

A Detective Comics #40 CGC 3.5 showcases the origin and first appearance of Clayface. It is also the first Joker cover, by Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson, from Batman #1 and features a full-page ad for the issue. 

The Heroes in a Half-Shell make their debut in an original first printing of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 CGC 8.0. In addition to the Turtles, this issue also introduces Splinter and Shredder. 

True crime stories are detailed in a copy of Crime Does Not Pay #27 CGC 9.4, featuring a cover by Charles Biro. Lev Gleason, Dick Wood, Jack Alderman, and Bob Wood also contributed to this issue. 

The Justice League unites for the first time in Brave and Bold #28 CGC 4.5. The original team consists of Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter. Starro and Snapper Carr also make appearances.  

Writer Len Wein and artist Bernie Wrightson’s Swamp Thing makes his debut in a copy of House of Secrets #92 CGC 8.5. This issue also includes work by Virgil North, Alan Weiss, and Tony DeZuniga. 

The sea-beauty Namora gets a visit from Sub-Mariner in Namora #1 CGC 9.0, featuring art by Don Rico and Bill Everett. 

Matt Murdock, better known as Daredevil, makes his debut in a copy of Daredevil #1 CGC 5.0 signed by Stan Lee. Supporting characters Karen Page and Foggy Nelson also make their debut in this issue. 

Finally, the origin and first appearance of the X-Men is depicted in a copy of X-Men #1 CGC 3.5. This issue introduces the original team of Professor X, Cyclops, Iceman, Angel, Beast and Marvel Girl, while also introducing Magneto.
