ComicConnect Rare Toys End Monday
A toy auction, comprising about 100 lots is currently open at ComicConnect. The consignor, who prefers to remain anonymous, told the auction house the story about his journey in toy collecting took shape.
“My Grampa on my father’s side passed away when I was eight, to help in dealing with the loss I was taken to pick out a toy. I went down the big kids’ aisle and then I saw them all for the first time, the Aurora glow in the dark kits. King Kong came home with me that day. Then, I had to have Godzilla, so King Kong wouldn’t be lonely, soon I acquired Frankenstein, Dracula, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, the Werewolf, the Mummy, the Phantom of the Opera, and so on… Eventually the Aurora Comic Scenes magically started to appear on the shelves, I thought a model with a comic book inside was too cool to be true.
“In the blink of an eye, I started high school, still buying comics, even sending away for them through a mail order company. Another blink, and college begins, Marvel’s Secret War toy line comes out, and DC answers with a line of their own called Super Powers. I am too old to buy them, but they sure really look cool. Then I start discovering some people saved their childhood toys and I am floored. I start buying all the things from my past, but the key is, they cannot have been opened or played with.
“Fast forward to 2001, I walk into a sports memorabilia shop and see numerous toys, that I don’t have, in glass display cases. Which the owner of the shop says are not for sale. I am stunned, I have been taught my entire life that everything is for sale and everything has a price. There must be a way to obtain these things I want. Just then, the owner smiles and says, ‘When can you start?’ Well that Saturday afternoon changed my life forever. Many years have passed since then and the shop owner became a mentor, almost another father to me. He was true to his word, he would give me a toy here and there when I completed a job. This is where most of the Secret Wars, Super Powers, and Captain Action toys came from.
“A collector collects and when he completes a set, he moves on to the next thing. But, it isn’t fair for them to sit in acid free boxes in dark closets. When I bought these toys, I saved them to one day to be displayed. I hope they can bring joy to you as they brought joy to me. Please give them a good home and remember to not open them unless you really need too.
“Thank you, Mom, for dragging me all over town looking for the things I wanted. Thanks for letting me stay a little kid for as long as I could. Thank you, Artie, for taking me under your wing and being a father figure, and for keeping all your promises to me. You both influenced my life more than you will ever know,” the consignor said.
The auction ends Monday, December 4, 2017 at 7 PM ET. Interested collectors can view the toy collection and view the entire Event Auction on ComicConnect’s website.
