ComicConnect Adds “Bloody S” Logo Art to Death of Superman Auction
ComicConnect’s “Death of Superman” Special Edition Art Auction is now featuring the “Bloody S” Superman logo. The art was showcased on the black polybag for 1992’s game-changing Superman #75. The auction is entering the final week, with lots closing on Sunday, April 12, 2026.
The “Death of Superman” Art Auction offers the near-complete art by Dan Jurgens that helped define DC’s groundbreaking “Death of Superman” event. Now the auction features the original illustration from DC Art Department designer Mike Sellers, who worked from an original sketch by writer and editor Mike Carlin. The initial illustration was then passed on to Ed Bolkus, who was then the Art Director in DC’s Marketing & Advertising division. Bolkus would complete the final design, and then sell this piece to a collector.
This bloody take on the Superman emblem would become the symbol that embodied the entire concept of DC’s “Death of Superman” event. Over 30 years later, the design recalls all the impact of the historical issue, with the “S” used for the black polybag of the issue’s memorial edition, serving as the first image seen by most comic collectors upon the book’s release. The design was also used in promotional marketing, creating an abundance of early hype leading to the dramatic event.
Superman #75 made history as the issue that killed off Superman and set up the continuing “Funeral for a Friend” and “Reign of the Supermen” crossover stories that ran between many popular DC titles. Superman #75 sold over six million copies, as Jurgens’ art became a cornerstone for one of the most successful comic events of all time.
Much of the original art from the “Death of Superman” stories has since been acquired by collectors, with the original pages presented here becoming available for the first time since 1993. ComicConnect is offering a 45-day interest free Time Payment Plan for this auction, which begins to close at 7 PM ET on April 12.
