Comic-Con 2021 to be Virtual; Live Event in November
Comic-Con International has announced that San Diego Comic-Con 2021 will be held virtually as an @Home event with no in-person activities. The free virtual convention will be held on July 23-25, 2021. The next in-person con will be held in 2022.
“It is the policy of the organization to continue to closely monitor information from local and national healthcare officials as it pertains to the COVID-19 pandemic. Never could we have imagined what the world experienced in 2020 and continues to experience today. While we are buoyed by the rollout of the vaccine and the growing number of individuals being inoculated, it appears that July will still be too early to safely hold an in-person event of the magnitude of Comic-Con,” the Comic-Con statement reads.
This news follows their recent decision to hold WonderCon as an @Home con on March 26-27. In 2020 both San Diego Comic-Con and WonderCon switched from in-person cons to virtual events.
Comic-Con@Home will be a three-day event, reduced from the usual four-day convention. The organization cited “limited financial resources” due to the cancellation of the 2020 live events as the reason for the shorter convention.
Comic-Con is planning to host a smaller three-day live convention in San Diego in November 2021. They are currently working on determining the attendance capacity, badge cost, and other necessary details. Those updates will be posted on comic-con.org when they become available.
Badges that were already rolled over to 2021 will be automatically transferred to 2022, unless a refund is requested. Exhibitors who had payment rolled over from 2020 will be contacted with instructions and deadlines on payment for Comic-Con 2022 or for refund requests. They are also looking into ways to transfer badges to the November 2021 convention.
