Cloud Busting Charles
Early Saturday morning on May 20, 1927, Charles A. Lindbergh, then 25 years old, took off in “The Spirit of Saint Louis” from Roosevelt Field, Long Island. After passing Nova Scotia, he headed over the Atlantic and navigated his way to Paris using only a magnetic compass, his airspeed indicator, and a little luck. A frantic swarm of more than 100,000 people assembled at Le Bourget Field to salute him. When he landed, less than 34 hours after his adieu from New York, Lindbergh became the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. The successful flight captured the American public’s imaginations like few events in history ever had and perhaps ever will.
During the late twenties and thirties, children everywhere wanted to be just like their hero, the master of flight, Charles Lindbergh, and companies knew it. Products of all sorts were being produced with Lindbergh’s photo and likeness. The Official Hake’s Price Guide to Character Toys displays multiple items related to the era of Lindbergh: pins, badges, banks, buttons, and even “The Spirit of St. Louis” miniature model planes. These are all perfect examples of how Lindbergh was idolized by fans both young and old.
Geppi’s Entertainment’s upcoming Morphy Toy Auction has two high flying Lindy collectibles that are a perfect addition to any Lindbergh or aviation aficionado. There are two excellent condition cast iron Hubley Lindy airplane toys being offered. The cloud busters are repainted gray with the word “Lindy” marked in red on their wings.
Check out morphyauction.com for these toy airplanes and much more in the way of fantastic aviation collectibles. The Morphy Special Spring Toy Auction takes place April 4-5, 2008.
