Cheers for Cheerios

In honor of Cheerio’s 60th Anniversary, General Mills released a
commemorative box featuring one of the best-known promoters of America’s most
popular cereal, The Lone Ranger. The Lone Ranger had galloped onto the radio
waves in 1933, almost ten years before the 1941 release of the nation’s first
ready-to-eat oat cereal, then called Cheeri Oats (they’d become Cheerios in
1945). 1941 was also the year that General Mills became sponsor of The Lone
Ranger’s radio show, and thus a partnership was born that would leave an
indelible mark on American culture.

The Lone Ranger box pictured here
was released last year, and features the same image of The Lone Ranger as a 1948
box that also offered one of the great all-time paper premiums. In this premium,
The Lone Ranger Frontier Town, kids had to collect nine different boxes just to
complete part of the town. Once the town was assembled, however, kids could
follow along with the radio show and visit all of The Lone Ranger’s haunts with
him.

The Lone Ranger was featured on many more Cheerios boxes, and the
two offered almost 30 premiums to consumers through the years – from rings to
masks to figurines. Cheerios has certainly withstood the test of time and still
stands as a favorite of all generations – from babies enjoying their first
finger food to adults trying to lower their cholesterol.
