Casting Shadows with Obsidian
Todd James Rice, aka Obsidian, is a DC superhero who co-founded Infinity, Inc. and has been a member of the Justice Society of America and the Justice League. He can merge with his shadow, giving him the power to become intangible, invisible, phase, absorb shadows, manipulate or construct shadow, envelop villains and show them their own dark side, and he can fly.
Obsidian was created by Roy Thomas and Jerry Ordway, and he first appeared in All-Star Squadron #25 (September 1983). He was introduced as the son of Golden Age Green Lantern Alan Scott and villain Thorn/Rose Canton. Todd ended up being adopted and raised by abusive parents in Wisconsin, but found happiness when he found his twin sister Jennie-Lynn Hayden, aka Jade, when he was a teenager. The teen siblings decided to become superheroes like their father, and founded Infinity, Inc.
He joined the Justice League following the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths. When Ian Karkull corrupted him, Obsidian tried to blanket the world in darkness, until the team stopped him and removed Karkull’s influence. While recovering from what he did, Obsidian retired from being a hero and started dating assistant district attorney Damon Matthews.
In the “Brightest Day” story, Alan Scott was possessed by Starheart, so Obsidian rejoined the JSA to stop him. During the battle, Obsidian and Jade were briefly fused into a single being that was controlled by Starheart. Later in Doomsday Clock, Obsidian and other Justice Society members were erased by Doctor Manhattan, because he was trying to stop Alan Scott from becoming a hero. Superman saved them by convincing Doctor Manhattan to fix history, and Obsidian was reunited with his father.
