On the cusp of Captain America’s 80th anniversary, Heritage is offering one of the finest known copies of his first appearance. This major key will be sold in the Comics & Comic Art Auction on January 14-17, 2021.

Captain America Comics #1 CGC 8.5 is one of only three copies in the grade and there are only six known in better condition. In nearly 20 years, Heritage has only offered two in higher grade.

This auction has already grabbed significant attention when they announced the inclusion of Batman #1 CGC 9.4 – the highest graded copy by CGC.

“Either one of these books would be the highlight and centerpiece of any auction, but to have them both in the same event is nothing short of extraordinary,” Heritage Senior Vice President Ed Jaster said. “These are the titles, the heroes, the writers and the artists that have defined comic books – and now cinema – for eight decades. And to see two extraordinary firsts in such remarkable condition in the same auction 80 years after they were published is something special not likely to happen again.”

Joe Simon and Jack Kirby introduced Captain America in this issue, starting with a cover that showed the patriotic hero punching Hitler. The issue tells the now familiar tale of scrawny Steve Rogers who is injected with a serum that gives him extraordinary strength.

He became a flagship character for Marvel (then Timely Comics) and a stalwart hero during World War II. Since then his popularity has continued to grow through comics and on film.
