Captain Action Update: Toys, Animation & More
With their Wave 2 releases, the special Holiday Classic Cover uniform sets, and the Arctic Adventurer Captain Action under their belts and the Wave 3 releases just ahead, it seemed like a good time to get an update on Captain Action from our friends Ed Catto and Joe Ahearn at Captain Action Enterprises.
Although the good Captain is now readily available (and frequently highly sought after) in the collectibles world, it’s sobering to remember that just a few years ago – before Catto and Ahearn started their campaign – there was no new Captain Action merchandise. Their success is a testament to what fans can do with and for the characters they love.
They have announced that Wave 3 of the new Captain Action costume sets will be Marvel’s Iron Man and Wolverine. Both can be found listed in the January Previews from Diamond Comic Distributors. They said their “Assemble an Avenger” campaign, which includes a component of the costume set for Hawkeye in each of the deluxe sets, continues.
In the realm of comic books, they announced last year that they had partnered with Dynamite Entertainment for new Captain Action comic book adventures, but they still haven’t announced who the creative team will be. Catto told Scoop it’s getting a lot closer to when that will be announced.
On the prose front, their Captain Action pulp novel, Riddle of the Glowing Men, written by author Jim Beard and published by Airship 27 is now also available for Kindle.
There is also a slate of CA merchandise available from Titan.
Perhaps most exciting for CA fans is that they’re in development of a Captain Action cartoon series. The promotional material describes Captain Action – The Animated Series as “…featuring the exploits of the legendary ‘Swiss Army Knife Of Heroes’ – Captain Action. With his Action Directorate of young International ‘Heroes in Training,’ stories follow their worldwide search for the mysterious artifacts which enable them to assume the actual powers and identities of legendary heroes and heroines.” The show is being developed by Gang of Seven Animation and veteran comic book scribe Marv Wolfman (New Teen Titans) with Caption Action Enterprises.
We’re very pleased to present this first look at Action Girl, one of the show’s new characters, by Ben Caldwell and Steven E. Gordon.
