Bugs Bunny & Christmas

As popular a character as Bugs Bunny is, it’s a rather curious circumstance that his forays into holiday fare haven’t become Christmas classics. Of course, his main attempts at creating a Christmas buzz are decades old now… and didn’t make much of a splash at their time of release.

Dell released nine Giant issues of Bugs Bunny’s Christmas Funnies between 1950 and 1958.

The 1979 animated collection, Bugs Bunny’s Looney Christmas Tales, did well, too. With Chuck Jones and Friz Freleng at the helm, Warner Bros. released three all-new holiday-themed cartoons: “The Fright Before Christmas” (in which Bugs and his nephew, Clyde, await Santa Claus–only to be greeted by the Tasmanian Devil instead), “Bugs Bunny’s Christmas Carol” (with Yosemite Sam as Scrooge, Porky Pig as Bob Cratchit and Bugs as one of the ghosts), and “Freeze Frame” (where viewers discover that the Roadrunner despises snow). Though they don’t get the annual network TV reairing, they’re well respected cartoons that cater to die-hard fans of the Looney Tunes stable.

Interestingly, these less-than-epic attempts at generating timeless Looney Tunes Christmas tales didn’t stop composer Carrie Kraft from publishing Bugs Bunny’s Christmas Favorites: Piano Solos With Optional Duet Accompaniments in 1998. The songbook contains original compositions, passed off as Bugs’ holiday favorites.
