Big, Big Overstreet 50 is a Throwback

The cover of The Big, Big Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide #50 is a deliberate throwback to 1970’s first edition of The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide, and longtime fans will see the similarity at first glance. Gemstone Publishing’s Creative Director, Mark Huesman, designed and created this cover.

As always, the Big, Big version of the Guide is a larger format, limited print run, and it contains just the pricing data, none of the articles, ads or other insights found in the standard editions of the book. The cover highlights the logos of comic companies – both long-lived ones and more flash-in-the-pan types – from comics history, just as the first Overstreet cover did 50 years ago.

Each year since the Big, Big’s return with #42, this edition has experienced a faster sell-through.

This edition will be offered in the April 2020 PREVIEWS from Diamond Comic Distributors. The square bound, soft cover format first adopted for The Big, Big Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide #48 continues with this year’s book. This edition will be available exclusively through comic shops and carries a suggested retail price of $49.50. It will go on sale in the comic book market on Wednesday, July 22. The April PREVIEWS will be online Friday, March 20, and the print version will be in comic shops on Wednesday, March 25.

“Our cover for this year’s edition of the Big, Big is definitely a throwback, a great 50th anniversary bookend to Overstreet #1. Who would have imagined that we’d be celebrating the first one five decades later?” Overstreet said. “I think Mark Huesman did a great job with this tribute to my effort all those years ago.”

“Bob’s original cover has a certain iconic quality to it, and I wanted to give his version a 21st century polish. Being on the Overstreet cover artist roster is sweet, a nice honor to go with my 23 years of handling a wide range of duties involving the interior pages,” Huesman said.

Back in 1970, Bob Overstreet actually illustrated all the logos on the cover by hand, which makes his achievement with the Guide that much more incredible. At this point, 50 more years of comic book history have passed, and the Gemstone team wanted to represent some more modern comic book imprints as well as the classics featured on Overstreet #1. With modern technology at his command, Huesman definitely had an easier time of it than Overstreet, at least once the many logo possibilities were sorted through.

Huesman joins Lewis LaRosa (X-O Manowar), Will Conrad (Shadowman), Francesco Francavilla (Afterlife With Archie), Kevin Eastman (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), Joe Corroney (Star Trek), Billy Tucci (The Tick, and separately Shi), and Georges Jeanty and Karl Story (Buffy The Vampire Slayer) on the roster of cover artists for the Big, Big edition since its return in 2012.

The Bible of serious comic book collectors, dealers, and historians since it was first published in 1970, The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide is released each July by Gemstone Publishing. Compiled by founder Robert M. Overstreet with contributions from an extensive roster of Overstreet Advisors, the Guide offers insight into the complex and exciting comic book market.

The Big, Big #50 accompanies the previously announced Spawn/Spider-Man crossover cover by Todd McFarlane, Wynonna Earp by Chris Evenhuis, and Valiant Heroes by John K. Snyder III. They will join The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide #1 Facsimile Edition and Overstreet @ 50: Five Decades of The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide as part of 2020’s year-long celebration of the Guide’s rich history.
