BEST COMIC OF 2009 #3: Agents of Atlas #1
Marvel Comics; $3.99
Back in 2007, Jeff Parker wrote the first Agents of Atlas mini-series, in which he took the 1950s Avengers concept from the pages of What If…? and brought them to the modern day. The group featured Venus, the Human Robot, Namora, Marvel Boy, Gorilla Man, and former FBI and SHIELD agent Jimmy Woo, a team of characters all of which were originally published by Marvel’s predecessor Atlas (for those of you playing along at home, the Atlas name came after Timely and before Marvel).
The mini-series was a bit of a hit and the hardcover collected edition was a thing of beauty, ranking as #1 on Scoop’s “Best of 2007” list. Now the team is back with a new on-going series that kicks off as part of the “Dark Reign” storyline. The folks from the 1950s, it would seem, have big plans for the 21st century, and it starts with running into Norman Osborne’s HAMMER troops and goes from there.
