Beowulf
Harper Trophy; $8.99
Word of the monster’s terror has spread far, and from across the sea comes Beowulf to battle Grendel and free the kingdom from his reign…
Written some fifteen hundred years ago, Beowulf is widely attributed as the first epic work in the English language. A story of bold heroism, struggle and a savage oponent, it has captivated those who have heard and read it ever since. Now X-Files and Nancy Drew writer Stefan Petrucha and 30 Days of Night: Bloodsucker Tales artist Kody Chamberlain have crafted an outstanding interpretation of Beowulf in the form of graphic novel aimed at readers 8 to 12 years old.
The book is beautfully produced. Its adapation is well thought out and accessible, but most importantly it never talks down to its intended readers. If you want to introduce a young reader to this epic poem in a highly accessible manner, it’s hard to imagine doing better than this book.
