BBC Radio To Unveil 40 Years of Lost Programming

years worth of classic radio shows the network feared forever lost, due to its
archive department’s failure to keep copies of the original broadcasts.
Not long ago, BBC appealed to listeners to submit anyone home-taped
copies of the alleged missing recordings, dating back to 1960, and what they’ve
collected is nothing short of invaluable.
Among the discoveries are a
concert by the Rolling Stones, a piano recital by actor Gregory Peck, an early
example of a radio documentary-drama chronicling the Zeppelin raids on London
from 1961, the entire Kenneth Williams comedy series (The Kenneth Williams
Playhouse), a missing episode of The Archers (which features the
debut of Brian Aldridge, who later became one of the soap’s staples), the comedy
series I’m Ken and He’s Bill starring Peter Cleall, Derek Seaton and
Patricia Hayes and a live Beatles performance broadcast just once in
1963.
The recordings, many of which were submitted in reel-to-reel tape,
format are currently being transferred to CD.
Several of the acquisitions
will be featured on Radio’s Lost Property, to air on Radio 4 Saturday,
November 1. BBC plans to divide the airing of its new finds between Radio 4 and
new comedy/drama network Radio 7.
