What would happen if the stern, indefatigable Dark Knight crossed paths with the chaotic, wisecracking Merc with a Mouth? Comic fans will find out in the fall of 2025.

The crossover was originally teased during ComicsPro in February when DC and Marvel editors stated that they were working on their first intercompany crossover in over 20 years. The publishers are now revealing some of the details on the story that will bring Batman and Deadpool together.

The story begins in Deadpool/Batman when Wade Wilson is hired to do a job in Gotham City where he naturally catches the attention of Batman. The Caped Crusader has zero patience for Deadpool’s shenanigans, and a plot by the Joker could be the only thing that will make them work together. The one-shot is written by Zeb Wells, the Spider-Man comics writer and co-writer of the Deadpool & Wolverine script, with art and cover by Greg Capullo, whose large list of credits include Batman and X-Men. It will be accompanied by backup stories that bring together other Marvel and DC characters. The one-shot arrives in stores on September 17, 2025.

“After writing Amazing Spider-Man for 60 issues, I told Marvel I needed a break. Marvel told me I could do that, or I could write a comic starring Deadpool and Batman with the best Batman artist of our generation. I no longer needed a break,” Wells said. “In Batman we’ve found someone who has even less time for Deadpool’s antics than Wolverine, but a city-wide threat from the Joker makes strange bedfellows (literally, if Deadpool had his way). It’s been a blast letting Deadpool loose in Gotham City and watching what happens.”

“Am I dreaming? This crossover is likely to be the high point of my career…and, I’ve had a great career,” Capullo said. “Some of my earliest work (many years ago) was on X-Force, so Deadpool and I go way back. More recently, I spent 10-plus years drawing Batman at DC. The idea that I get to do a crossover event with Deadpool and Batman…If I am dreaming, please don’t wake me!”

DC will then take the reins for Batman/Deadpool, written by longtime Batman scribe Grant Morrison and illustrated by Dan Mora, the Batman/Superman: World’s Finest artist. The details on this one-shot and its backup adventures will be announced at a later time. It will arrive in stores in November.

“I don’t do many comics these days but there was no way I could turn down the chance to work with Dan Mora again, one of my all-time favorite artistic collaborators – and definitely no way I could turn down Batman and Deadpool!” Morrison said. “Expect fourth wall busting mayhem, owls, blood, blades, and at least one giant typewriter!”

“This is more than I ever imagined I could do in my career, and it is a huge honor to be part of this crossover: it doesn’t happen too often, and I am a huge Deadpool fan!” Mora said. “When I first worked with Grant, I didn’t know what to expect but it was an incredible team-up. I always hoped to work with Grant again, and working on Batman/Deadpool is like a dream come true. Grant and I working together on this once-in-a-lifetime project is going to be such a fun experience.”

In addition to announcing Deadpool/Batman and Batman/Deadpool, DC and Marvel also revealed plans for a set of one-shots featuring characters from both publishers. Those books are scheduled to arrive in 2026.

The Big Two publishers began their tradition of mixing their stable of heroes and villains in 1976 when the Man of Steel met the Wallcrawler in Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man. It was soon followed by another character mashup in Batman vs. The Incredible Hulk. Several more stories saw focused groups of characters meeting like Uncanny X-Men and the New Teen Titans, Darkseid vs. Galactus: The Hunger, Batman and Captain America, and Superman / Fantastic Four to name a few.

Published in 1996, DC Versus Marvel saw a much larger group of characters clashing, including fun moments like Spider-Man meeting the Joker and Superman vs. Juggernaut. That comic event led to the Amalgam Comics joint publishing venture, a mixing of the two comic universes that gave us Super-Soldier (an amalgamation of Superman and Captain America), Jean Black (a combination of Jean Grey and Black Canary), and Dark Claw (a mashup of Batman and Wolverine), among others.

Most recently in 2003 to 2004, another large group of characters from each publisher met in JLA/Avengers. The heroes were forced into a game where they had to compete to find 12 incredibly powerful items that were hidden in their worlds.
