In "The Stone That Turns All Metal Into Gold," you could swear that it is three-dimensional. The blues pop right out at the viewer and the entire painting assumes an other-worldly glow, giving the illusion that you are in the labyrinth of Crete with Scrooge, Donald, and the boys. Based on the Barks’ original story from Uncle Scrooge #10 "The Philosopher’s Stone," the painting is already attracting bidders form around the world.
The second painting listed jumps from the island of Crete to a saloon that could easily be found in the Pacific Northwest. From the earliest days of Uncles Scrooge’s mythology, "The Goose Egg Nugget" is based on the story from Four Color #456 (1953). Painted in 1973, the art serves as a perfect example of Barks’ attention to detail as well as high sense of fun. If you look into the mirror behind the bar, you see everything at a perfect 45 degree angle from where it should be. It’s as if you are standing in the back with the other amazed patrons. Take a look at the dog pouring himself a shot at the bottom of the frame. He is missing his glass!
