Baltimore Comic-Con: It’s Here!

When 200,000 special Baltimore Comic-Con promotion copies of Marvel’s
Fantastic Four #60 appeared in the Baltimore Sun this past
Sunday, Marc Nathan knew he was coming down the final stretch in preparation for
putting on his third convention, which starts tomorrow, October 26, and runs
through Sunday, October 27, at the Baltimore Convention Center.

“We
haven’t even stopped adding creators,” Nathan, the convention’s promoter, said
with a laugh. “In fact, it’s been almost steady stream the last few weeks.
Fathom creator Michael Turner and David Wohl from Top Cow, Shi
creator Billy Tucci, artist J.G. Jones, and Comic Book Legal Defense Fund
special guest Jeff Smith, creator of Bone, have been added in the last
few weeks. We’re excited to have each and every one of our guests, but with a
line-up of people like [longtime X-Men writer] Chris Claremont, in-coming
Aquaman writer Rick Veitch, a Silver Age legend like Julie Schwartz, hot
contemporary writers like Judd Winick (Green Lantern) and Brad Metzler
(Green Arrow), and independent creators like Jimmy Gownley (Amelia
Rules!
) and Steve Conley (Astounding Space Thrills), we’ve really got
something for just about every type of comic book fan.”

When it was
announced this summer at Wizard World Chicago that Nathan would make comic book
history by placing an order for 200,000 copies of a single comic, it definitely
suggested that the upstart Baltimore Comic-Con was making the transition to a
higher level. He said his idea was not only to capitalize on the recent
successes of comic characters in other media, particularly films, but to reach
out to people who’d drifted away from comics.

“I wish I bought more and
could have found a way to afford the Washington Post!” he said with
another laugh.

Centering a show’s drawing power based solely on comics
these days goes against the conventional wisdom, but Nathan said he’s been
enthusiastic about the challenge since before he announced his first show two
years back.

“I have been told by other promoters that if I want a ‘large’
attendance I will have to get media guests,” he said. “We’ll see. If the
Fantastic Four #60 promotion works then I will prove that wrong, and I
don’t think that would be a bad thing for comics. Look at how many of our guests
are still with us from the first year. More than that, see how many of them not
only came back but enthusiastically offered to bring their friends and fellow
creators, who in turn have recruited even more folks.”

Nathan said he’s
also received a lot of feedback from fans that they like the comics-centered
theme of the show.

Tickets are available at the gate, through
Ticketmaster, or through www.comicon.com/baltimore
