Baltimore Comic-Con is partnering with the Hard Rock Café Baltimore once again to present the 2022 Annual Costume Craftsmanship Contest. The convention will be held on October 28-30, 2022, at the Baltimore Convention Center.

The adult costume craftsmanship contest will be held on Saturday, October 29 at 4 PM. All participants must be in the judge room by 12:30 PM and the judging will start at 1 PM. It will be split into novice, journeyman-traditional, and journeyman-large build contests.

The children’s costume contest will be held on Sunday, October 30 at 2:30 PM and all participants must be in the judging room by 12 PM.

Entrants in the costume craftmanship contest are encouraged to bring reference material for their characters and a build book that showcases their process for the judging panel to reference.

“We’ve slightly revamped the costume events for 2022, but we’re very excited about it,” Carrie Wood, the Baltimore Comic-Con costume contest returning judge, said. “We learned a lot last year about what cosplayers really want out of a contest like this, so you may notice we’ve changed things up a bit by adding new subcategories in our adult contest. We hope that this is a move that better reflects the current cosplay community and provides more opportunities for success.”

In addition to the craftsmanship contest, they have added a cosplay showcase. The showcase will give cosplayers the chance to show off their costumes whether or not they made their own outfit.

“I’m personally very excited about the addition of the cosplay showcase event. We noticed a lot of folks last year were entering the costume contest with store bought costumes and really just wanted a moment to shine on stage – and we want to encourage that,” Wood said. “But at the same time, having the separation between a craftsmanship competition and a showcase benefits everyone, and allows everyone a little more time to shine. That’s why we rebranded this year’s contest to the costume craftsmanship contest and added the cosplay showcase.”

The contest judging is headed by Wood who is joined by judges ChibiTifa and Amanda Cadavid. Wood has been cosplaying for nearly two decades and while she was Gemstone Publishing’s Assistant Editor, she used her experiences to co-write The Overstreet Guide to Cosplay. ChibiTifa has over 15 years of experience as a cosplayer and seamstress, and she represented the US during the 2021 World Cosplay Summit. Cadavid has been cosplaying for nearly 20 years and also does costume design commission work.

All of the costume contest details are available on the Baltimore Comic-Con website.
