Randy Dickensheets has seen many fascinating items cross his auction floor after being discovered in attics and garages. He was, however, surprised when one such find sold for over $30,000.

Dickensheets operates OnSite Auction Co. and recently at the Porters Fire Co. in Porters Sideling, Pennsylvania a pre-Civil War autograph book sold for $31,900. Attention for the book was drawn from all over the country, and ended up heading to the West coast with a California collector.

The book included over 300 autographs compiled by James Lorimer Graham, a U.S. consul to Italy at President Zachary Taylor’s inauguration on March 5, 1849. Signatures from Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson, James K. Polk, Millard Fillmore, and Zachary Taylor can be found in the book. Other autographs include Stephen A. Douglas, Sam Houston, Daniel Webster, Henry Clay, John C. Calhoun, Thomas Hart Benton, Dolly Madison, Jefferson Davis, and Alexander H. Stephens.

Dickensheets was hoping to get between $10,000 and $20,000 for the book and was pleasantly surprised by the $31,900 sale. He explained that not just the signatures, but the good condition of the book attracted bidders. “This was a great, great book,” Dickensheets said. “I don’t know where you’re going to find another one.”
