… And then there was Zatanna.

Ice Princess scribe Hadley Davis announced this week that she’s
developing a script based on DC Comics heroine Zatanna. Denise DiNovi will
produce the project, which Davis confesses will be a tween-centric comedy in
which Zatanna is no longer the mature, magic-practicing woman she is in comic
book lore. She’ll be something more akin to televisions Sabrina the Teenage
Witch.

Given the relative success of Davis’ Ice Princess (starring
Buffy alum Michelle Trachtenberg), we can’t say she won’t have an
audience for her Zatanna. We also aren’t really speculating that the film will
be flat-out bad. And it’s not like Zatanna isn’t deserving of mainstream
recognition (or isn’t she?). We’re just wondering why the project will be
so far removed from the character’s origins.

Tweens? Comedy?

We
bet there’ll be bumbling and pratfalls and a hunky, chess-playing quarterback
love interest.

… Or something.
