American Mythology Productions and Goodman Games have established a publishing partnership for a line of original Dungeon Crawl Classics comics. The books will expand the universe of the tabletop roleplaying game and follow its dark fantasy style. American Mythology President James Kuhoric first announced the comic during a panel at Baltimore Comic-Con.

Kuhoric, a veteran of horror and fantasy comics like Fright Night and Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash, is penning the book.

“Comics and RPGs have been part of my DNA for as long as I can remember,” Kuhoric said. “I was running Dungeons & Dragons on the elementary school playground back in 1980. We didn’t have elaborate terrain or fancy miniatures, we had pencils, paper, dice, and a bunch of kids ready to see what happened when their characters opened the next door. That feeling of possibility has never left me.”

Kuhoric will collaborate with Goodman Games founder Joseph Goodman to produce “stories steeped in dark sorcery, lethal stakes, and the wild gonzo energy that defined tabletop roleplaying golden ages,” per the press release.

Goodman created Dungeon Crawl Classics in 2012, and it has become a well known property in the modern old school RPG movement. The game uses elements of early fantasy RPGs, featuring dangerous missions, magic, monsters, and aspects of sword and sorcery stories.

“Dungeon Crawl Classics is about imagination without a safety net,” Goodman said. “You open the door, you don’t know what’s behind it, and sometimes the thing behind it has six arms and a really bad attitude. That’s what makes it fun.”

American Mythology’s comic will create new characters and adventures that follows the tone of the roleplaying game. Dungeon Crawl Classics players and Judges of can use accompanying game modules to experience the story while playing the game.

“I’ve always loved comics, and I’ve always loved the way a great comic can make you want to grab some dice and start playing,” Goodman said. “James understands that connection instinctively. He knows how to create characters and situations that feel like they jumped straight out of a game session, but he also knows how to tell a great comic book story. I’m incredibly excited to see what stories American Mythology can spin with DCC.”

“I’ve spent my career writing horror and fantasy stories, and Dungeon Crawl Classics captures that same sense of discovery, danger, weirdness, and fun that made those early games so magical. Getting to tell original stories in that world through comics and then connect those stories to adventures people can actually play, is an absolute dream,” Kuhoric said.
