Alex Ross Connecting Covers on JLA/Avengers Facsimile Edition
During the summer of 2026, DC and Marvel are bringing back their seminal JLA/Avengers crossover. The special series by Kurt Busiek and George Pérez brought together the heroes of Marvel and DC to stop the interdimensional villain Krona from destroying both of their universes. The publishers are bringing the book from 2003-2004 back in a facsimile edition and will feature variant connecting covers by Alex Ross.
He has crafted two covers for the facsimile editions that pay homage to George Pérez’s cover on Comics Interview Special Edition #6 (1983). First up, Marvel will publish JLA/Avengers #3 in July showing Marvel heroes like Thor, Iron Man, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Monica Rambeau, and Captain America. Then DC will publish Avengers/JLA #4 in August featuring DC heroes that include Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Flash, Black Canary, and Green Arrow.
Ross has been illustrating comics since the 1990s, bringing his fine art style to the Big Two publishers in early examples like Marvels at Marvel and Kingdom Come at DC. He is among the most in-demand cover artists who has painted many of the biggest heroes at DC and Marvel with the gravitas seen in art museums.
JLA/Avengers begins with Krona arriving in the Marvel universe where he meets the Grandmaster who suggests that they conduct a cosmic game. He proposes that heroes from both universes compete to find 12 powerful items from both of their continuities. While on their quest, the two hero teams realize that they aren’t enemies and must stop competing and work together to defeat Krona and save their realities.
The historic book reunited the Avengers creative team of Busiek and Pérez – the latter of whom had made inspiring contributions to both publishers. DC and Marvel are reproducing the four-issue series with classic trade dress, original wraparound cardstock covers, and the story as it appeared during the first printing.
