Two of Albert Uderzo’s Astérix and Obélix original art pieces and two by Jean “Moebius” Giraud surpassed six-digit totals in Heritage’s International Comic Art Auction. The auction on April 18-19, 2026, was led by Uderzo’s recognizable cover painting for Les Lauriers de César that went for $450,000.

The cover shows the marble profile of Julius Caesar in sculptural tones, with Astérix and Obélix appearing in vibrant comic book colors on the right. The series co-created by Uderzo with writer René Goscinny debuted in 1959, and has consistently been one of the best selling comics around the world. Despite its global reach, few of Uderzo’s cover paintings have been offered at auction.

The next highest price paid in the auction was for Uderzo’s Astérix Chez Les Helvétes #16 story page 2 that went for $212,500. The page captures the absurd humor of the book with a comedic scene that gathers a parade of the Gaulish village.

“The price achieved for the page is significantly above what has been seen on the market for at least the past two years,” said Olivier Delflas, Heritage’s Director of International Comic Art and Anime.

Moebius’ art was also big hits with bidders, starting with the Major Fatal, The Airtight Garage of Jerry Cornelius splash page 4 that went for $137,500. The page shows Major Grubert and Jerry Cornelius racing to make repairs in the Airtight Garage. The Old Major and Jerry Cornelius standalone canvas of Major Fatal seated in front of a large painting of Jerry Cornelius on the wall totaled $100,000.

The pieces from Uderzo and Moebius were part of the auction’s Platinum session that ended with 18 premier items combining for nearly $1.4 million. Highlights from the Platinum group were Robert Crumb’s The Complete Crumb Comics Vol. 10 that cleared $75,000 and a Jack Kirby Silver Surfer page from Fantastic Four #76 that hammered for $68,750. An Enrico Marini story page from Batman: The Dark Prince Charming #2 brought $57,500 and John Romita Sr.’s Captain America #140 cover of Cap and Falcon reached $51,250.

Manga art also performed well in the auction, with Masanobu Asai’s Adventure King Astroganger splash page going for $15,000. Buichi Terasawa’s Space Adventure Cobra: Secret of the Ultimate Weapon Vol. 3 Chapter 3 story page 67 realized $11,875 and Jiro Kuwata’s Moonlight Mask color page achieved $10,625.

“The results achieved are exceptional,” Delflas said. “Buichi Terasawa, Jiro Kuwata and Masanobu Asai show very promising momentum for the future of this category.”
