One of the most influential gaming studios in video game history is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. Activision was established on October 1, 1979 and over the last three and a half decades has published some of the biggest franchises in gaming, including Call of Duty and Skylanders.

Activision was established as the first third-party developer in video gaming after a group of programmers for Atari decided to split from the company. Their first major hit was Pitfall! for the Atari 2600, which would go on to sell more than 4 million copies and become the second-bestselling game on the platform, next to Pac-Man.

Since then, Activision has gone on to acquire a number of other gaming studios, including Neversoft, Infinity ward, and Treyarch. In 2007, Activision merged with Vivendi Games to form Activision Blizzard, which has since become one of the most dominant forces in video gaming outside of the console developers (Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft) themselves.

Activision has celebrated its 35th anniversary in video gaming with some enormous game releases, including Destiny, which launched in September 2014 to positive reviews, Skylanders Trap Team, and the upcoming Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. It’s clear that as long as there are video games, there will also be Activision.
