Action Comics #1 Cover Leads Heritage Comics & Art Auction
Heritage’s Comic & Comic Art Signature Auction is coming up soon on June 26-29, 2025. The auction is packed with comic keys, including high grade first appearances, and high value original art from artists like Frank Frazetta and Steve Ditko. One of the standout items is a CGC-encapsulated copy of the Action Comics #1 cover.
The lot includes the entire front and back cover from the issue that introduced Superman. It is perhaps the most famous comic book cover and when attached to the rest of the book, it’s the most valuable comic in the world. The cover is already set to be a record breaker for a loose cover offered at auction. According to Heritage, the highest price paid for a loose cover was the cover to Flash Comics #1 that sold for $20,000 in January 2025.
The auction contains many complete comic issues, led by a group of high grade first appearances. They include Incredible Hulk #1 CGC 9.2 with the debut of the Hulk, Fantastic Four #1 CGC 9.2 and CGC 9.0 featuring the first appearance of the team, and X-Men #1 CGC 9.2 with the debuts of Professor X, Magneto, Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Iceman, Beast, and Angel.
The original art section is topped by Frank Frazetta’s Famous Funnies #214 cover of Buck Rogers and his companion about to be shot as their ship hurtles toward the moon. It is one of eight Buck Rogers covers that Frazetta provided for Famous Funnies and is famously considered an inspiration for George Lucas’ Star Wars. The cover is being offered at auction for the first time.
Steve Ditko’s Amazing Spider-Man #25 splash page 1 highlights the dueling aspects of Peter Parker/Spider-Man’s life. It shows a full figure image of Spidey, a split bust of the hero, portraits of some of his supporting characters, and J. Jonah Jameson appears as the main antagonist.
The Wall Crawler is represented in another high value art lot with Todd McFarlane’s Amazing Spider-Man #311 cover of Spidey battling Mysterio. The DC side of original art showcases Jock’s Detective Comics #880 cover of the Joker, depicting him with a rictus grin, Bat-symbols in his eyes and bats flying from the top half of his face.
Top comic lots also include Amazing Fantasy #15 CGC 7.5 with Spider-Man’s debut, Superman #1 (the Man of Steel’s first titular comic), Whiz Comics #2 (#1) featuring Captain Marvel’s first appearance, Batman #1 CGC 3.5 (the Dark Knight’s first self-titled book), and Captain America Comics #1 CGC 5.5 first Captain America, Bucky, and Red Skull.
