A Skateboarding Superhero Fights Monsters in Superpunk
A 13-year-old skateboarder, podcaster, and punk turns into a monster-fighting superhero in Superpunk. The adventure story about rebellion and protecting loved ones comes from artist Guilherme Petreca and writer Mirtes Santana, and is published by Oni Press.
“After discovering her grandfather’s old cassette player, Violeta decides to play a cassette tape backward. (Why? It’s pure punk rebellion, duh!) What she didn’t know was this rebellious act would grant her magical powers! Aaaaand . . . unleash monsters. A LOT of them,” per the description. “Violeta will need to use all her new superpowers to protect her home of Hollow Hills from the strange creatures and send them back to wherever they came from. Luckily, she’s joined by Alan, Violeta’s faithful sidekick and fellow podcaster. Together, they’ll have to find a way to put these monsters back in their place. But between homework, podcasting, and skateboarding, Violeta has a tough time managing it all. When a horde of monsters descend on her school, will this superpunk be able to save the day? Superhero + punk = Superpunk. That’s Violeta!”

The book was crafted by Santana, a writer known for penning Brazilian TV series like Brainiacs and The Nutty Boy; and Petreca, an artist who created Carnaval de Meus Demônios and Ogiva. First published in 2017 as a zine, Superpunk was inspired by Petreca’s preteen years listening to his Walkman and imagining that invisible monsters were nearby. The comic marks Santana’s first foray into writing comics.
Superpunk is now in comic shops and a preview can be seen below.
