A Conspiracy is Uncovered in New Star Trek: Red Shirts Series
IDW has announced a sequel to the Star Trek: Red Shirts limited series, starring the often disposable Starfleet security officers. In Star Trek: Red Shirts: Ghosts of the 21st Century, one of the red shirts learns about a callous directive connected to his job. The five-issue sequel is written by Gerry Duggan (Deadpool) and illustrated by Scott Buoncristiano (Buffy the Vampire Slayer).
It’s common knowledge that Starfleet security officers, aka red shirts, are typically the ones who face violence and/or death on dangerous missions. Star Trek: Red Shirts followed a group of mostly unknown security officers on missions that resulted in multiple gory deaths.

The sequel series starts with security staffer Harry Deubert finding something hidden inside a dead coworker’s body. He discovers Section Null “…a secret Starfleet directorate turning disposable red shirts into assets in a sprawling criminal conspiracy,” according to the synopsis. He teams with Andorian officer Lyna Taval – who has her own agenda – to learn more about the secret, and become targets themselves.
“Someone inside Starfleet Security is selling out the Federation. And once Deubert and Taval learn what red shirts are really for, there’s no going back. ‘I’ve not been able to enlist in Starfleet until now, but I can promise this new volume of Red Shirts is going to leave a very big bruise on Star Trek,” Duggan said. “The Romulans have an insidious plot to destabilize the Federation, and it’s my privilege to help them and drop as many bodies as we can along the way. Set your phasers for fun, and see you in space.”

“I was over a month into a Star Trek rewatch when I was asked to do Red Shirts,” Buoncristiano said. “It’s one thing to watch this universe, but it’s another to be able to draw and create within it. Collaborating with Duggan and the crew at IDW is a blast, and I can’t wait for readers to see what we do to these poor, doomed Red Shirts.”
Star Trek: Red Shirts: Ghosts of the 21st Century #1 features covers by Chris Shehan, Chris Burnham, and an espionage homage variant by Malachi Ward. The series debuts on July 22, 2026.
