Sith lord Maul is traveling to a darker corner of the galaxy in the animated TV series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord. The teaser trailer catches up with Maul after he was dismissed by Sith Master Darth Sidious and is regrouping to exact his revenge.

Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord picks up after the events of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, for a pulpy adventure that finds Maul plotting to rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet untouched by the Empire. There, he crosses paths with a disillusioned young Jedi Padawan who may just be the apprentice he is seeking to aid him in his relentless pursuit for revenge,” the synopsis reads.

The series is set in the world of Janix, showing the underworld activities that are happening at the beginning of Palpatine’s reign as emperor. The trailer paints a picture of the dangers in Janix, leading to Maul’s arrival and his first laser-filled encounter with the locals. Maul (Sam Witwer, reprising the role from The Clone Wars and other Star Wars projects) meets his potential apprentice and begins giving lessons in the realities of the galaxy. Much of the trailer’s second half is devoted to showing off Maul’s impressive skills.

Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord was created by Dave Filoni and will run for ten episodes. Matt Michnovetz, whose credits include Star Wars: Rebels, The Clone Wars, and The Bad Batch is head writer on the series. Brad Rau, known for directing episodes of Star Wars: Rebels, Forces of Destiny, and The Bad Batch, is the supervising director. Filoni, Michnovetz, and Rau are all executive producers on the project.

“Cinematography Lighting & VFX Director Joel Aron really took it up a notch with going back to the practical ways of capturing brush strokes by painting them on glass, shooting them then strategically placing them in shots,” Executive Producer and Vice President of Lucasfilm Animation Athena Portillo said. “He even went back to establishing matte paintings on canvas. There’s always different challenges with every show that we do, but this one in particular raised the bar. We also wanted the animation body mechanics and the facial to be more fluid from our previous work and animation director Keith Kellogg worked closely with CGCG and our internal animation team to upgrade the performances of our main characters.”

The voice cast also includes Gideon Adlon as Devon Izara, Wagner Moura as Brander Lawson, Richard Ayoade as Two-Boots, Dennis Haysbert as Master Eeko-Dio-Daki, and Vanessa Marshall as Rook Kast.

The first two episodes will premiere on Disney+ on April 6, 2026. After that, two episodes will drop each week, leading to the finale on May the Fourth, aka Star Wars Day.
