Salu Digby, aka Shrinking Violet, is a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes from the 30th and 31st centuries. Originally, she had the power to shrink down to subatomic size, then later gained the ability to grow to giant size. Her skill also includes the ability to fly using her Legion ring, she is a strong fighter, and an expert spy.

Jerry Siegel and Jim Mooney created Salu, introducing her in Action Comics #276 (May 1961) as an alien from the planet Imsk. She originally tried out for the Legion of Super-Heroes with Supergirl and Brainiac 5, but didn’t join until later with Bouncing Boy and Sun Boy. During that time, she proved to be an asset to the team and dated Duplicate Boy from the Heroes of Lallor.

At one point, she was kidnapped by residents of Imsk, who replaced her in the League with the shapeshifting Yera Allon. Her strange behavior – including falling for Colossal Boy who she had never shown interest in before – made Legion leader Element Lad and Shvaughn Erin of the Science Police suspicious. Once they uncovered the truth, the Legion saved Salu and she returned to working with the team.

After the Legion broke up, Shrinking Violet returned to Imsk and was drafted into the war with the planet Braal, which was home to her former teammate, Cosmic Boy. During the Battle of Venado Bay, Violet tried to save Cosmic Boy from other soldiers of Imsk. Cosmic Boy was disoriented by the melee and pain he was experiencing, and attacked Violet, blinding her in one eye. Later the two were able to reconcile and Violet’s eye was repaired, though she retained a large scare on her face.

After Zero Hour, her origin story was changed. In that continuity, she joined the Legion when she helped to stop Micro, who killed a fellow Legion applicant. In another story, she was corrupted by the Emerald Eye of Ekron, which manipulated her powers. Once she was freed of its influence, she gained power from the deceased Leviathan and was now able to grow in size, as well as shrinking.
