The Sinestro Corp, aka the Yellow Lantern Corps, is a team of supervillains led by former Green Lantern, Sinestro. Like the Green Lanterns, the Sinestro Corp derive their power from a specific emotion tied to a color. In their case, they are powered by fear that manifests in the color yellow.

The team appeared for the first time in Green Lantern Vol. 4 #10 (May 2006) as a creation of Geoff Johns and Ethan Van Sciver. Their story began when Parallax, the embodiment of fear, was captured and held inside the Central Power Battery on Oa. Its imprisonment created a weakness to fear in the Green Lanterns’ power rings. At the time, Sinestro was the best Green Lantern in the universe and was sent to Earth by Supernova to erase Guy Gardner.

Booster Gold was also sent there to prevent Sinestro from completing his mission. He flattered Sinestro, telling him that his yellow Legion of Super-Heroes ring was a tribute to Sinestro. When Sinestro asked Booster what his team was called, Booster schmoozed him by saying it was the Sinestro Corps.

Sinestro started to rebel against the Green Lantern Corps and eventually the Guardians of the Universe banished him to the antimatter universe. Once he found his way back, Sinestro was now using a ring powered by yellow fear energy. Following multiple fights with Green Lantern Hal Jordan, Sinestro was jailed inside the Central Power Battery. Refusing to give up, he used the ring to wake Parallax and they manipulated Hal Jordan, leading to the fall of the Green Lantern Corps.

While the Green Lantern Corps started to rebuild, the Sinestro Corps began to look for others who could instill fear, and offered them yellow power rings if they joined the team. One of the first recruits was Arkillo, a sadistic, muscular creature who enslaved weapon makers on Qward and forced them to make yellow rings. He also became the team’s ring/combat instructor. The sentient virus Despotellis, and Karu-Sil, who was raised by animals and possessed a predatory instinct joined the team. The dangerous sniper Bedovian and Amon Sur, Abin Sur’s son who had tried to steal Hal Jordan’s ring, were also added to the ranks.

Similar to the Green Lanterns, the Sinestro Corps members work in different sectors throughout the universe. They also have their own yellow Central Battery that is located on Qward. Sinestro’s goal is to bring order to the universe, which he believes the Green Lanterns and the Guardians have failed to do. But unlike the Green Lanterns who thrive on bravery and willpower, the Sinestro Corps want to restore order by using fear.
