Wicked: For Good, the second half of the Wicked film adaptation, soared into movie theaters with a $150 million domestic opening weekend. The movie made an additional $76 million internationally for a global box office total of $226 million.

The sequel to 2024’s Wicked bested the first movie’s domestic ($114 million) and global ($164 million) first weekend, which also debuted on the weekend before Thanksgiving. It scored the second highest domestic opening of 2025, behind A Minecraft Movie, which opened at $162.75 million.

The movie set a new domestic and global opening record for a movie based on a Broadway show and the biggest November domestic opening for a musical – both records previously set by Wicked. It earned the second biggest domestic opening for a Universal film (behind Jurassic World’s $208.8 million) and second biggest domestic opening on the pre-Thanksgiving weekend (behind The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’s $158 million).

Wicked: For Good is an adaptation of the Broadway musical, Wicked, which was split and expanded into two films. The musical is loosely based on Gregory Maguire’s Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which is in turn based on characters in L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

The first Wicked movie introduced Glinda the Good Witch (Ariana Grande) and Elphaba Thropp (Cynthia Erivo), the future Wicked Witch of the West, as unhappy college roommates and eventual friends. Despite gaining some acceptance at Shiz University, Elphaba became a pawn of the Wizard and her teacher, Madame Morrible who want to use her magical powers to oppress animals. The movie ended with the Wizard and Morrible spinning the narrative that Elphaba is a villain and enemy of Oz.

In Wicked: For Good, Elphaba continues to fight for animal rights and Glinda becomes a spokesperson for the Wizard as he and Madame Morrible grow more powerful. Despite their friendship, the two women are headed for a major confrontation that leads into the arrival of Dorothy and the events in The Wizard of Oz.
