The ocean is calling to Moana, and she is ready to venture on a voyage to save her island in the live-action remake of Moana. Like the original film, it will take her on a magical trip where she makes new friends, discovers things about her family and herself, and encounters plenty of danger.

Disney has released the first teaser trailer for the film, introducing Catherine Laga‘aia as the adventurous Moana and featuring scenes recreated from the animated film that was released in 2016. We see Moana’s connection to the sea, her interaction with Kakamora, and shows Laga‘aia singing the anthem, “I Am Moana (Song of the Ancestors).”

It teases Dwayne Johnson as the live-action Maui, showing him from behind as he transforms from a beetle to a human. It also features a shot of Maui using his fish hook to turn into a hawk then flying into the sky.

Moana is directed by Thomas Kail (Hamilton). The cast also includes John Tui as Moana’s father Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as her mom Sina, and Rena Owens as Gramma Tala.

Original Moana voice actor Auli’i Cravalho is one of the executive producers with Kail, Scott Sheldon, and Charles Newirth. Johnson is producing with director-writer-songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda, Beau Flynn, Dany Garcia, and Hiram Garcia.

Moana sets sail in theaters on July 10, 2026.
