The Daily Planet’s intrepid young photographer Jimmy Olsen is zooming in on his own TV show. Skyler Gisondo, the actor who played Jimmy in Superman will reprise the role.

Gisondo had a standout performance in Superman, particularly for his tenacity and being an unassuming ladies’ man. The TV series was built around Gisondo as Olsen who will handle stories that involve superpowered criminals.

It will also star other Daily Planet reporters, though Clark Kent and Lois Lane will not be among them. Gorilla Grodd, the super-intelligent, power-hungry ape, will be a primary antagonist in the first season.

Jimmy Olsen has been a staple in Superman comics since his first appearance in the early 1940s. He is typically portrayed as an ambitious man, just a bit younger than Clark and Lois, who looks up to Clark. Jimmy’s debut was in The Adventures of Superman radio serial in 1940, and since then he has appeared in nearly all Superman movies and shows. Actors who played him on television have included Jack Larson in Adventures of Superman, Michael Landes and Justin Whalin in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Aaron Ashmore in Smallville, and Mehcad Brooks in Supergirl.

Superman director James Gunn and his DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran are executive producers on the new show. Galen Vaisman is overseeing the project for DC.

Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda, the team behind the American Vandal mockumentary, will write, executive produce, and showrun the series. American Vandal was a comedy that parodied true crime shows with a team investigating who vandalized a school parking lot. Given the style of that show, it could mean that the Jimmy Olsen series will have a similarly comedic tone.
