Inside the Guide: Overstreet HOF – Dan DeCarlo

Born on December 12, 1919, Dan DeCarlo established the visual house style of Archie comics for the modern age. DeCarlo created Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Cheryl Blossom, and Josie and the Pussycats (he named Josie after his wife) for the company in addition to his work on the various other Archie titles.
He broke into the comics working for Timely Comics in 1947, drawing such classic titles like Millie the Model. He also freelanced for The Saturday Evening Post, Argosy, and the Humorama line of pin-up cartoon digests. He won the National Cartoonists Society Award for Best Comic Book in 2000 for Betty & Veronica.
The prolific artist has also been cited to be a strong artistic influence on Love & Rockets creators Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez, among others, and his work can be seen in a new line of “best of” hardcovers from Archie and IDW Publishing.
